Enhancement of Phagocytosis of Group a Streptococci by Antibody Fragments Derived from Rabbit Immunoglobulin by Pepsin Digestion1

From the Department of Medicine, University of Illinois and Veterans Administration, West Side Hospital, Chicago, Illinois

Abstract

F(ab')2 and Fab' fragments of rabbit IgG antibody were prepared by peptic digestion and purified by exclusion chromatography. The bivalent and univalent antibody fragments were shown to retain the ability to enhance the phagocytosis of homologous, virulent group A streptococci in the presence of fresh, heparinized, normal human blood.
