Abstract

Infection of BS-C-1 cultures with three strains of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi produced distinctive cytopathic effects. Titration of rickettsial suspensions in this tissue culture system using the appearance of CPE to determine endpoints was found to give results similar to those obtained by titrations in mice. Neutralization of rickettsial infectivity by specific antiserum could be demonstrated in this tissue culture system. The neutralizing effect of rabbit antisera was strain-specific and appeared to be enhanced by the addition of complement.
