Mouse Macroglobulin Antibody to Sheep Erythrocytes: A Non-Complement-Fixing Type

Paul H. Plotz, Harvey Colten and Norman Talal

From the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases and the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland

Abstract

The sera of mice immunized with sheep erythrocytes were found to contain two types of macroglobulin anti-sheep erythrocyte antibody. One type fixes complement and is hemolytic; the second type cannot fix complement or lyse red cells except in the presence of rabbit anti-mouse macroglobulin antiserum. The ratio of the non-hemolytic to hemolytic serum antibody increased during the course of the primary response.
